Job Summary: Job Summary:The Senior Technical Writer will plan, write, and edit technical documentation including manuals, quick reference cards, and online help for laboratory protocols, instruments, and software. A degree in the life sciences is not necessary, but it is necessary to learn how to use the products, understand the science at a moderate level, and write in a way that is appropriate for a scientific audience.
The candidate will have full responsibility for documentation suites in one or more product areas, and is expected to work with field scientists and customer feedback to continually improve usability and quality. Learning, upholding, and helping to evolve team standards and processes is required. The candidate must be able to successfully execute multiple projects from concept to publication under tight deadlines and changing conditions while coordinating input from numerous sources. Excellent organization, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and on collaborative teams are critical.
The Senior Technical Writer is expected to act as a lead writer, coaching other writers while also personally producing documentation. S/he is expected to think critically and see gaps in products or processes, show initiative and good judgment in developing solutions, and then train writers or other stakeholders so that those solutions can be applied more broadly. The senior writer is expected to maintain performance under pressure and deal effectively with ambiguous or missing information. S/he should respond creatively and resourcefully when obstacles arise, and choose the best course of action when no perfect solution is possible.
Sophisticated understanding of the principles and practices of tech writing is essential, as is expert knowledge of Adobe Framemaker, Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Acrobat, SnagIt (or similar), and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of other tools such as MadCap Flare or DreamWeaver is strongly desirable. The candidate must be proficient in English, attentive to publications standards, and equipped with excellent grammatical and editorial skills.Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Plan, write, and edit technical documentation for a scientific audience
• Collect data by interviewing specialists, researching written material, attending training and demonstrations, using software, and observing users
• Collaborate with representatives of multiple departments on projects
• Quickly learn and apply new tools, processes, and scientific information
• Successfully manage multiple projects from concept to publication under tight deadlines
• Initiate and drive projects to improve quality and efficiency; support similar initiatives driven by others on the team
• Help build a strong training infrastructure so that all writers benefit from new discoveries and developments
• Train and mentor new writers
• Coordinate projects with dependencies on employees from multiple departments

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent; scientific knowledge a plus. Five to eight years of experience as a technical writer, preferably in industry (software, hardware, biotech).
