Full-Time Publications Editor (Suva, Fiji)

Job Description

Background – SPC was established in 1947 and employs over 570 staff. Its headquarters are in Noumea, New Caledonia, with other offices in Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia and Solomon Islands. SPC has 26 member countries and territories including its founding members, Australia, France, New Zealand and the United States of America, which contribute a large proportion of its funding. Other major development partners are the European Union; Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; United Nations agencies; Asian Development Bank; World Bank and Global Environment Facility, to name a few.

1. Editing and report production – Edit reports produced by technical programmes (structural and copy editing, proofreading). Facilitate programme contributions to corporate publications. Ensure corporate requirements for production, translation and distribution of publications are met. Review and copy edit all material submitted for graphic design, including posters, brochures and online material. Supervise the day-to-day activities of around four publications staff located in SPC’s Applied Geoscience and Technology Division.

2. Project management – Carry out publications projects in line with the section’s objectives and work plan, which may require initiative, information gathering and collaboration with partners. Oversee the overall production process (including layout and graphic design services, quotations, printing and distribution) in close liaison with programme and Publications Section staff. Liaise with freelance editors in consultation with the Manager, Publications Section.

3. Writing and rapporteuring – Draft articles and publications (such as press releases, articles and annual reports) to suit the required target group, and revise/rewrite documents as needed. Provide rapporteuring services for meetings of the Conference of the Pacific Community and its committees, and for other meetings as required by SPC’s senior management team. Provide support/coaching for writers and authors for whom English is a second language, and training and support to staff and counterparts in SPC member countries.

4. Completion of SPC’s Applied Geoscience and Technology Division’s compendium project – Oversee the completion of this short-term project and liaise on arrangements for the ongoing maintenance of the compendium (a digitised collection of Pacific Island geoscientific information) by the Applied Geoscience and Technology Division. Monitor feedback following the launch of the compendium and work with developers to refine the system as required, including the user interface, manuals and guidelines on set-up and operation of the online system. Process requests for access to material contained in the collection.

Remuneration – The Publications Editor is a Band 10 position in SPC’s 2013 salary scale, with a salary range of 2,221–3,331 SDR (special drawing rights) per month, which currently converts to approximately FJD 6,000–9,100 (USD 3,400–5,100; EUR 2,600–3,900). An offer of appointment for an initial contract will normally be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration being given to experience and qualifications. Progress in the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews. Remuneration of expatriate SPC staff members is not subject to income tax in Fiji; Fiji nationals employed by SPC in Fiji will, however, be subject to income tax.

Benefits – SPC provides a housing allowance of FJD 1,170–2,625 per month. Establishment and relocation grant, removal expenses, airfares, home leave, medical insurance and education allowances are available for eligible employees and their recognised dependants. Employees are entitled to: 25 days annual leave and 30 days sick leave per annum; life insurance; and access to SPC’s Provident Fund (contributing 8% of salary to which SPC adds a matching contribution).

Work environment – SPC has a standardised computing environment based on Microsoft Office. Smoking is not permitted in the work place.
