This position is located in Elkridge, MD and the candidate must be able to work on-site.
Description:
Technical writer needed for a state government contractor. Technical writer will work with a group of technical writers and instructional designers to document system changes for state applications and systems. Responsible for interviewing subject matter experts and system developers to gain understanding of system changes and modifications. Will work with instructional designers to verify training materials and user documentation correspond.
Duties: May perform one of more of the following duties:
- Plans, develops, organizes, writes and edits operational, software end-user guides, manuals, and technical reports for client software applications and internal documentation and/or publications
- Utilizes current graphic design technology and computer software packages to produce reports, manuals, proposals, instructional material, catalogues, hardware/software documentation and graphic presentations
- Serves as technical graphics expert in consultation with internal users and subject matter experts on issues involving validation of statistical graphs and charts converted from raw data
- Designs creative, image-enhancing presentations for materials used in marketing and promoting the company’s services
- May be required to record meeting minutes on a very limited basis

Qualifications:
- Expert in researching, developing, and documenting technical design specifications, and flowcharts
- Able to observe a process and document the steps taken in order to hand the document to a person unfamiliar with the process to complete
- Able to adapt proactively to a dynamic and rapidly changing business and technical environment and resolve problems and implement change in a timely manner
- Ability to write in explanatory, procedural and creative styles for multiple audiences
- Expert proof reader and editor for all final customer deliverables
- Expert Microsoft Office Suite (including MS Project and MS Visio)
- 5-10 years technical writing experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

- MS Office 2007 (Word, Outlook, Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Publisher)
- SnagIt
- Adobe
- Saba LMS experience (desired, not required)
Experience:
- 5-10 years technical writing experience
- Experience writing software lifecycle documentation on large, complex and/or multiple concurrent projects
- Experience with requirements analysis, change management and meeting facilitation
- Experience interviewing subject matter experts to develop documentation content
