Position Summary: | Reporting to the Director, Continuing and Professional Education with matrix reporting to the Assistant Director, Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning, the Instructional Designer provides support to faculty, students, and staff engaged in primarily noncredit distance and distributed eLearning at Virginia Tech. Core Responsibilities Consult and collaborate with faculty to provide instructional design and delivery strategies for online professional training and academic course development. Work with faculty to translate academic course content from credit to noncredit and from face-to-face to online format. Train faculty and staff regarding instructional design and delivery. Apply quality assurance guidelines to course components; perform production tasks as required. Consult with and lead development teams to analyze, design, produce, and deliver online instructional programming. Develop and document production processes and online learning best practices. Maintain collaborative relationships with faculty and staff; work one-on-one and in groups with faculty and academic course/professional training development teams and design online learning interactions likely to recruit and retain online learners to Virginia Tech. Contribute to establishing and implementing short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, operating procedures, and programs and services for noncredit online education; assist in the selection and management of technology and tools to improve the distance learning infrastructure; help to monitor and evaluate overall effectiveness, and participate in developing and implementing changes required for improvement. Participate in research and outreach. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations and university policies. Leads or serves actively on appropriate University and Professional committees and task forces; effectively represents CPE and IDDL to internal and external constituents. Performs other duties as assigned. |
Required Qualifications: | Masters degree in instructional design or a related field, and thorough knowledge of and experience with instructional design, and adult learning theories and practices, including: 1) managing and documenting multiple instructional design projects with competing deadlines; 2) analyzing, designing, developing, and delivering instructional online programming; 3) producing synchronous, asynchronous, and blended online professional training and 4) various distance learning course management tools (e.g., Learning Management Systems), web development and authoring tools (e.g., Dreamweaver), and other applications (e.g., Photoshop, PowerPoint). Demonstrated ability to quickly learn to use new electronic tools and systems, to work effectively with others in a creative environment, and to evaluate and make recommendations for new technology. Experience can be demonstrated and/or gained through directly-applicable university coursework. Must possess strong interpersonal, communications and project management skills. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Earned doctorate in instructional design or a related field by the position’s start date; experience working with faculty and staff, and teaching in a higher education setting, whether at a distance or face-to-face; experience with software tools and systems for synchronous web delivery (e.g., Centra, Adobe Connect, etc.) and demonstrated understanding of distance and distributed learning and instructional systems development processes. |
