Job Description Sr. Technical Writer, OpenStack
Location: Palo Alto, CA
The Technical Publications team consists of over 60 writers, editors, managers, production personnel, and tools specialists that work directly with product and project teams across the software development lifecycle to deliver documentation for the 25-plus VMware Products (major and minor releases) and SDKs. Team members must have the flexibility and versatility to adapt to the challenges that work on products with broad scope and scale can bring. The team prides itself on meticulous, fast-paced, high-quality documentation. It is never boring!
Job Scope:
We are looking for a writer to create documentation on how VMware technologies integrate with the OpenStack open source project. The writer should demonstrate strong writing skills and solid experience documenting sophisticated virtualization/cloud software. This position utilizes the writer’s knowledge of software installation, upgrade, and general system administration as well as compute, storage, and network technologies. The writer must have strong team sensibilities, be able to work with multiple writers on large scale products in a fast-paced environment, and be able to understand and explain complex technical concepts to system and storage administrators working in a virtualized environment.
Responsibilities:
– Create documentation for technical users who install, configure, and manage complex VMware software in OpenStack-based cloud deployments. Documentation consists of installation and management guides, release notes, technical papers, and knowledge-base articles.
– Collaborate with software developers, product managers, writers, information architects, quality assurance engineers, and technical support engineers to develop documentation
– Collaborate with other members of the OpenStack documentation community (https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Documentation) to improve community documentation including Administrator Guides and API documentation (see: http://docs.openstack.org/).
– Work individually and on a team, read design documents and specifications, and use pre-release software
– Create documentation designs, plans, and schedules
– Update documentation for minor software releases and create manuals from scratch for major releases
– Use DITA/XMetaL and a content management system to author high quality documentation on schedule. Output to a variety of formats for our Web site, including HTML, PDF, and ebook formats.
– Create OpenStack community documentation using Docbook
– Create Web pages and other collateral in HTML
– Storyboard and script videos on key product technology, concepts, and tasks
Requirements:
– BS/BA in Technical Communication, English, Computer Science, related field, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years of experience writing software documentation for a technical audience
– Experience writing virtualization, data center, and server technology software documentation
– Ability to organize information, learn complex technologies, and explain concepts and instructions clearly and concisely. Should have an understanding of virtualization and cloud management space.
– Must be flexible and enjoy working with new technology in a fast-paced environment
– Understanding of structured, task-based writing is a plus
– Basic knowledge of UNIX/Linux is a plus
– Knowledge of HTML, XML, DITA or Docbook is a plus
– Knowledge of video creation and production a plus
