Job Description Position: Senior technical writer, network virtualization
Job location: Palo Alto, CA
Join us as we virtualize the network. Every 15-20 years, a technology
comes along that changes the IT landscape. VMware has done it once
already with server virtualization, and now we’re doing it again with
network virtualization. VMware’s Network and Security Business Unit
has an immediate need for an experienced technical writer to create
user guides for the VMware NSX product line.
As a writer on a very small documentation team, you’ll work closely
with some of the smartest engineers in networking and virtualization,
creating user guides that explain how to stand up software-defined
networks and how to install and manage the data center infrastructure
that supports them.
You should bring to this position a solid track record of producing
user documentation for an audience of IT professionals and/or software
developers. Experience with IP networking, virtualization, and cloud
computing tools (VMware, Amazon AWS, OpenStack, or CloudStack) is
desired.
In this role, you will work extensively with the product, develop your
own expertise in using it, and write clear explanations that show
cloud administrators, data center administrators, and network
administrators how to set up the NSX products, how to create and
manage logical networks on them, and how to connect these networks to
other networks. Additional writing will explain how to manage the
creation of NSX-based networks using virtualization management and
cloud orchestration tools such as VMware and OpenStack.
Required:
– Experience writing documentation for IT administrators
– Sharable writing samples that demonstrate your ability to write
clear administrator documentation
– Ability to work efficiently at the UNIX/Linux command line
– Proficiency with FrameMaker
– Firm grasp of IP networking technologies
– Willingness to work at a startup cadence that releases software
every six weeks

Desired:
– Experience writing documentation for virtualization/cloud
administrators and/or network administrators
– Proficiency with DITA or other XML-based documentation formats
– Experience producing HTML-formatted documentation from FrameMaker
or DITA sources.
– Firm grasp of virtualization technologies and infrastructure.
– A belly full of the virtualization Kool-Aid. :-)
