Synopsis of Role:

American Public University System (APUS), located in Charles Town, WV seeks applications for an Instructional Designer. The individual will work within a school to develop new and update existing courses to accomplish instructional design projects. This position will be embedded in one of the University’s academic schools, while reporting to a Curriculum Design Manager.

The Instructional Designer is a full-time academic professional position. The Instructional Designer is responsible for design, development, management and support of online courses as offered through their assigned academic school. The Instructional Designer works collaboratively with Deans and Program Directors within the school, engages with Faculty and other external subject matter experts to analyze, determine, and strengthen instructional needs; provides expertise and assistance with innovation in instructional strategies to meet curriculum needs; reviews and updates master courses; and generally supports curriculum quality of course and program offerings.   Experience using a learning management system (LMS), content management system (CMS) or learning content management system (LCMS) is required.  This position will work cross-functionally with members of the Academics Department to collaboratively develop and deliver the instructional resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Works collaboratively with Program Directors, School Deans, Faculty, Staff and Administration to support the development of effective instructional materials for a wide variety of projects.
  • Applies learning styles (adult and traditional) and established instructional design processes (analyze, research, conceptualize, design) to learning content in distant delivery.
  • Executes quality course design within a LMS, CMS or LCMS.
  • Advises Program Directors and Deans at all phases of a curriculum development project from design through assessment.
  • Performs administrative aspects of course development, delivery, and support.
  • Collaborates across departments and teams in order to ensure smooth process and resources.
  • Provides regular reports to the Dean, Senior Director, Curriculum and Instruction, and Provost.
  • Manages work assignments using established project management tools.
  • Resolves issues related to technology use in instruction, including assessment, andragogy, deployment methodologies, and integration strategies.
  • Participates in training and professional development activities.
  • Through ongoing research, monitors current and cutting edge technology-mediated learning.
  • Provides guidance in the development and implementation of effective and diverse learning strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Must be able to demonstrate a deep commitment to the production of innovative, high-quality learning materials, utilizing a wide variety of multimedia modalities, as evidenced by a strong work portfolio.
  • Strong working knowledge of online course design principles and practices to ensure learner engagement and active learning.
  • Proficiency in e-learning, Web development tools, and media applications.
  • Understanding of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) online framework.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to translate content provided by Faculty into interactive multimedia instruction.
  • Ability to work in a team setting to execute projects in a well-coordinated manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills and a service-oriented spirit.
  • Organized with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently using project management tools.
  • A high degree of self-motivation and an ability to work independently.
  • Proven ability to stay current with rapidly changing technologies.

Required Experience

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or Education-related discipline, with significant experience in online curriculum building and web-based course development within an asynchronous learning network environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design or a related field will be considered with commensurate experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively on educational courses and/or projects.
  • Prior experience managing multiple Instructional Design projects for an institution of higher education preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience with online education, graphic and web design and/or multimedia.
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in working with learning management/online learning platforms, especially Sakai.
  • Online teaching experience is highly desirable.
