Job Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Executive Director of New Initiatives and Outreach or designee, and in collaboration with SDSUs Instructional Technology Services (ITS), the primary role is to work with CES and other directors, faculty and instructors and students (from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds) to design new or re-design existing courses to formats that ensure outcomes-based, learner-centered instruction. The instructional designer will consult with directors, instructors and faculty in the design, development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of engaging, instructionally sound multimedia applications including web-based learning objects, tools, and resources.

    • Serves as the lead instructional designer for CES distance learning projects.
    • Oversees curricular and instructional design support to program directors and instructors in designing, selecting, and/or implementing learning materials, activities, assessments, and other resources that make use of technology, including emerging web-based technologies for learning.
    • Facilitates increased integration of campus standard technologies such as learning management systems, web conferencing tools, and e-portfolio systems.
    • Contributes to data gathering that can help CES and ITS with continuous improvement and needs assessment.
    • Evaluates and assesses distance learning courses and programs.
    • Works with directors and instructors to implement best practice instructional design methodologies.
    • Develops training and online resource material for faculty and students.
    • Works with CES program directors to assess, design, develop, implement and evaluate DE courses and programs.
    • Researches and recommends new course design methodologies and technologies.
  • Other instructional design duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications or related field, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.
    • Minimum three years successful experience creating and delivering on-line courses.
  • Training and experience in instructional design or instructional technology.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Interactive people skills including negotiation, training and development and coaching.
    • Knowledge of instructional design principles and learning theories, best practices and current innovations in use of technology to support instruction and learning.
    • Commitment to customer service with demonstrated ability to work individually, and in a team environment with instructors, staff and students.
    • Expertise with a variety of software applications and new learning technologies related to the integration of technology in instruction (e.g., adaptive technologies, productivity tools, web editing tools, digital imaging, multimedia authoring, learning management systems, e-portfolios, communication tools, etc.).
    • Extensive and direct experience in working with course management systems including Blackboard and Moodle.
    • Ability to interpret client needs.
    • Online teaching and learning experience in blended and fully distributed environment.
    • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated enthusiasm for maintaining currency with new developments and awareness of organizational change principles.
    • Extensive experience with Windows and Macintosh computer systems.
    • Ability to create timelines and meet deadlines.
    • Experience in assisting others in designing instructional technology applications.
    • Ability to coordinate projects and work in teams creatively and collaboratively.
    • Ability to work independently and effectively while handling multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively with college faculty, staff, and students who may have diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Education/Certifications
  • Earned master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Systems or closely related field.
Preferred Experience/Special Skills
    • Work experience in higher education.
  • Minimum 3 years of classroom teaching and/or training.
