Full-Time Senior Technical Writer (Houston, TX)

Job Description

The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for creating, developing, planning, writing and editing operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publications, from planning stage through delivery. This position will focus on help documentation for geoscience interpretation software.

General Job Duties:

Work closely with development teams in an Agile software development environment to produce online Help documentation for new products and features in the IHS Kingdom Software geoscience interpretation suite. Work to revise and improve existing documentation and provides assistance for user interface text and design as required. Evaluate products and analyze customer requirements in order to determine information required by the end user. Design templates for books in the documentation suite and ensure that documents are tested before they are delivered. Advise design team on the usability of the product or application. Conduct interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation. Research and translate technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users. May document engineering processes and specifications. Recommend formats responsive to technical and customer requirements.
Produce products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards.

Specific Job Duties:

•Works independently or as part of a team
•May manage the performance of others
•Works closely with subject matter experts to understand and articulate complex geoscience concepts and workflows.
•Conducts independent research as required to supplement available technical documents.
•Create the help content for new features
•Work with documentation team to consistently improve on the design of help templates.
•Continue ongoing revisions to existing online help.
•Revise and edit marketing material and technical white papers as required.
•Organize and track work items in Microsoft Visual Studio.
•Requires consistent use of independent judgment to proactively problem-solve issues
•Strong understanding of technical writing processes to produce a consistent level of accuracy and timeliness of work
•Responsible for meeting one or more team quality metrics and for reviewing the quality of work of others
•Provides training and mentoring to junior level colleagues
•Primary customer contact; provides advice and expertise.
•Works closely with development teams on software interface text and messaging
•Allocates tasks to others and determines optimal utilization of resources in work group
•Creates, updates, and maintains training materials, user’s guides (pdf or HTML); online Help (tools to be specified); release notes; and installation, troubleshooting, and quick reference guides
•Leads a writing team; contributes to the maintenance of our style guide, and regularly review documentation for grammar, consistency, technical accuracy, and good organization
•Assumes the responsibilities of the Technical Documentation Manager as necessary
•Performs other duties as required

Knowledge and Skills:

•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•Strong interpersonal skills – must be able to work effectively as part of a project/program team and foster team cooperation

•Ability to work in a fast paced, flexible environment on multiple projects and teams
•Demonstrated project management experience, including budgeting and setting timelines.
•Must be familiar with Technical Documentation processes and procedures.
•Experience with RoboHelp and/or Flare, Word, PaintShop Pro, Acrobat and Nuance PDF Converter Professional, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and/or other tools as required.
•Excellent interpersonal skills Experience with Adobe FrameMaker a plus
•Experience with WebWorks Publisher and other authoring tools a plus
•Experience with Sharepoint and Microsoft Visual Studio also a plus
•Must have extensive experience interviewing Subject Matter Experts and converting that information into clear and concise user documentation.

•Should have experience with client-server applications.

• Must be able to learn new software and technologies quickly.

•Must have experience in a software development environment.

•Ability to comprehend current developments in their area of expertise

•Very strong oral and written communication skills

•Very strong presentation skills

•Displays sense of urgency in resolving client issues

•Comfortable in working in a fast pace support environment

Qualifications

Required Education:
Bachelors in Technical Communications, English, Journalism or related field or equivalent experience and / or professional certification

Required Experience:

•Typically 7 years of experience in the profession
